OU ITE Partnership

Welcome to the OU ITE Partnership

We're proud to deliver the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Wales at The Open University in Wales. Accredited by the Education Workforce Council, our innovative Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes are available across Wales.

This site is for current and prospective partner schools, as well as wider stakeholders. It offers clear, practical guidance on our salaried and part-time routes — ideal for schools considering endorsing or hosting aspiring teachers.

Who We Are

The OU ITE Partnership brings together The Open University, The Open University in Wales, a broad network of partner schools, and key education stakeholders. At the centre of everything we do are our student teachers.

We create a supportive, inspiring environment where student teachers can grow in skill, confidence, and knowledge. Our programme blends academic rigour with hands-on experience, preparing students to achieve QTS at primary or secondary level — fully accessible across Wales in either English or Welsh.

Our Programme

Our two-year postgraduate PGCE is designed to encourage deep reflection, self-evaluation, and meaningful professional growth.

We offer two flexible study routes:

  • Salaried (employment-based) route
  • Part-time study route

Both routes are available at primary and secondary level.

Important Update:

Thanks to new Welsh Government policy, all schools in Wales now receive a salary grant to endorse student teachers on the salaried route. This makes our programme more accessible and attractive for both schools and applicants.
