2.23 Herts AI test and learn

Academic team: Dr Paul Walley (C&C/CPRL, OU), Dr Helen Glasspoole-Bird (CPRL, OU)
Policing partners: Hertfordshire Constabulary
Status: Complete

Hertfordshire Constabulary have been working with a private to develop a new AI tool “ADA”. This listens to conversations between police and victims/witnesses, recorded on Rapid video response equipment and transcribes this information into witness statements and other police reports. This work conducts an early review of the use of AI in the statement taking process to understand if productivity gains in terms of time savings can be made alongside improved statement quality and consistency. The work involves interviews with stakeholders, linguistic comparison of human and AI-generated reports and an assessment of the impact on workload. A preliminary report is due at the end of March 2025. Other papers and reports will follow as the functionality and application of the AI is improved and widened.
