On Saturday 28 March 2026, AP Cymru and The Open University in Wales will launch the first-ever Caring for Carers Cymru community event - a full day dedicated to supporting carers of neurodivergent children. Hosted at The Marion Centre, Cardiff from 10am–4pm, we're bringing together specialists, services, and resources under one roof to give carers the practical help and emotional support they deserve.
Here's six things you may not have known about carers in Wales:
1. Wales has the highest percentage of unpaid carers in the UK
This is currently around 12%. In total, there are 370,00 unpaid carers in Wales.
2. Unpaid care in England and Wales is worth around £184 billion
The value of unpaid care in England and Wales is worth an estimated £184 billion a year – that’s equal to the annual funding of the NHS.
3. Over half of unpaid carers feel overwhelmed
As of February 2025, 57% of unpaid carers reported feeling overwhelmed often or always.
4. 35% of carers would describe their mental health as ‘bad’ Many carers say that their wellbeing is under strain
Carers are under a lot of pressure. 35% describe their own mental health as ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’. A further 25% would say the same about their physical health.
5. The waiting list for an autism diagnosis in Wales is rising
As of December 2025, the waiting list for an autism diagnosis in Wales has reached three years - and continues to rise. This can directly affect the support families receive.
6. Carers say they’re overwhelmed by stress, exhaustion, and uncertainty
Carers often report struggling with feelings of stress, anxiety, exhaustion and isolation. This can be exacerbated by financial hardship, lengthy waiting lists to access key services, and uncertainty about what the future may hold.
Whether you’re a carer, a professional, or someone who wants to understand more about supporting neurodivergent families, this event is for you.
