Professor Matt Balme

We are excited to congratulate Matt Balme as he becomes a Professor of Planetary Geoscience with immediate effect.

This reflects his excellent portfolio of research and the associated international impact of his work. In addition Matt has shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for planetary (geo)science with undergraduate students and postgraduate researchers to great effect. He has studied the surfaces of planets for over 20 years, and for more than 15 years has focused on Mars. Matt leads the Planetary Environments Research Group. He is a member of the ExoMars PanCam (a multispectral stereo camera) team, and works with the European Space Agency to help determine how the ExoMars Rover will operate on the surface.

MoonRISE: OU receives grant to unite experts to protect the Moon through sustainable governance

A new project, led by Dr Alessandra Marino, has received a grant with a value of £1.245m from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to trial an integrated governance approach to protect the Moon and its sites of interest. MoonRISE: Re‑Imagining Space Environments brings together a range of scholars from different disciplines to answer a pressing question: how do we safeguard the Moon at a time of intensified exploration?
