Access study space and academic resources near you

Studying at a distance doesn’t mean studying alone. As an Open University (OU) student, you can take advantage of SCONUL Access - a free national scheme that lets you study at and borrow books from many university libraries across the UK and Ireland.

Why OU students love SCONUL Access:

Study alongside others

SCONUL Access gives you the chance to work in a university library environment, helping you feel part of a wider academic community and study alongside other students.

Access quiet, comfortable study space

Need somewhere calm and focused? Many participating libraries offer quiet, well-equipped spaces designed for study - ideal if home isn’t always the best option.

Use a library closer to you

The scheme allows you to access academic libraries that are local to you, making it easier to fit study around work, caring responsibilities, or other commitments.

Reliable Wi-Fi when you need it

A nearby university library can also give you dependable internet access, helping you stay connected to your studies wherever you’re based.

Who can join?

The scheme is free for OU students who are currently registered on a module worth 30 credits or more. Once you’re a member, your access can be renewed each time you register for a new module. Full eligibility details are available in the OU’s SCONUL Access Policy. If you’re based outside the UK or Republic of Ireland, there may also be international alternatives available.

Students tell us that being part of SCONUL Access supports both their studies and wellbeing:

“As I do not live local to an OU campus, it is helpful to be in the university environment to motivate and facilitate my studies. Accessing other university libraries allows me to have the benefits of a brick uni while having the flexibility of distance learning.”

“The SCONUL Access scheme gave me the opportunity to find a welcoming, positive and quiet place in which to study. As a low income, distance learning student, I feel this has been instrumental in my successes so far as an OU student.”

To learn how to apply or renew your access, visit the Using other libraries and SCONUL Access page on the Library website. If you have questions or need help at any point, the Library Helpdesk is available via 24-hour online chat, 7 days a week.
