The Open University in Scotland is delighted to present Face To Face with the Future: Catriona Havard at Bloody Scotland 2025.

Catriona Havard, Professor of Psychology at The Open University, presents an intriguing exploration of the myriad ways that humans and machines make mistakes in facial recognition. Her work with police forces throughout the UK has shown how errors in recognising faces, including eyewitness identification in police line-ups, can lead to miscarriages of justice.

She will present an interactive, illustrated talk based on her ground-breaking new book When Face Recognition Goes Wrong featuring personal anecdotes, real-world examples of everyday social interactions, problems with border control passport verification, and the near-future dangers of machines being asked to be super recognisers.

Tickets are £9 (£8 concession), available from the Bloody Scotland website.

The OU offers modules such as Counselling and forensic psychology: investigating crime and therapy, a BA (Honours) Criminology and Psychology, and an MSc in Forensic Psychological Studies.

If you have an interest in psychology and justice and want to learn more, we have a wide range of free online courses available via OpenLearn, including Forensic psychology & Investigating a murder with forensic psychology.
