This eSTEeM project explored implementing a framework: the Model of Accessible Collaborative Engagement (MACE). MACE was built collaboratively with students and staff at the Open University over a number of years and extensive studies, with an aim of reducing barriers to engagement in synchronous online learning events (such as tutorials) for students with disabilities. The eSTEeM project explored the implementation of the framework in a level one computing module (TM111). Several interesting findings emerged shedding light on how we can best support our students and encourage active participation in learning events. It also highlighted areas of practice that need exploring and adapting to potentially improve both engagement and student retention.
We describe the implementation of the online summer school (OSS), an optional, enrichment program delivered in August. The program was designed around a series of context-based investigations related to real-world applications, to provide students with an additional opportunity to develop their scientific skills (investigative, data analysis, communication skills) and technical awareness of experimental techniques as well as extend their scientific learning beyond that in their qualification. We will discuss the general design principles of the OSS as it has developed over the last five years, including evaluation of the student experience and perceived benefits of the OSS
