This Open University project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and ran from 2003 to 2005. This project went further than a previous project, Reclaiming the Past, by capturing in detail the individual histories of six local East Anglian Mencap Societies before it was too late, before records had disappeared and before the people involved were no longer able to share their memories. These were hidden histories, as yet unrecorded.
A picture emerged of the crucial and diverse roles played by the Societies in the lives of families and people with learning difficulties.
