There are changing mandates within policing regarding police recruit training and education. There are currently three pathways into policing that require a degree-level qualification. An additional fourth, non-accredited pathway is being rolled out in forces. These differing pathways mean that qualification requirements vary as the content and duration of the pathways are different. This evolution presents unique challenges and opportunities for Tutor Constables (TCs) who play a crucial role in guiding recruits through their tutored phase of development.

Building on previous work in this area, this research will delve into the experiences of TCs supporting recruits from all entry pathways. Through job analytical techniques and interviews, the project aims to identify the essential qualities and skills of effective TCs in this evolving landscape. The findings will inform the development of a bespoke blended learning package tailored specifically for TCs. This package will provide TCs with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support recruits from all backgrounds and will align with national efforts in this area. Following development, the package will be piloted within the force to assess its effectiveness.
