Purpose of CPRL

To co-create and make use of high-quality knowledge with our policing and academic partners to support evidence-based practice and to achieve better policing for the good of society.

What CPRL does

Research

  • Directly relevant to current policing issues
  • Research jointly agreed and undertaken by police and academics in collaboration
  • Police partners add valuable insights, expertise and context to the research
  • Academics bring expertise in design, delivery and interpretation of the research

Doing research with CPRL provides our members with value for money, as the research supported by each partner brings learning for all other members. This means that your police force also benefits from the research activities financed by other members. The current multiplier effect is £21 of research undertaken for every £1 of your membership fee - meaning very high value for money. The research collaboration also increases the chances of your force being able to access external grants. The cumulative effect of a small membership fee is therefore substantial.

There is also a CPRL Working Group on Data Analytics. It is led by Davin Parrott, West Midlands Police and Dr Patrick Wong, OU. To join please email oupc@open.ac.uk

Learning

  • Providing a range of blended (online and face-to-face) learning for leadership at all levels
  • Informal as well as accredited learning programmes
  • Ranging from bite-sized and free Open Educational Resources to PhD studentships and tailored CPD programmes

Take advantage of the fact that the OU is the UK leader in online learning:

Knowledge into practice

  • Actionable knowledge influencing policy and practice
  • Interactive forms of knowledge exchange
  • Critical challenge and debate

Evidence Cafés - in police forces around the UK and virtually, focusing on topics which forces decide, e.g. police legitimacy, preventative approaches, public trust in the police

Theory of Change workshops - helping your force to develop pathways to outcomes in order to enable shared learning and evaluation

CPRL Roadshows - in police forces around the UK and virtually, providing an overview of what CPRL does and how it works, as well as focusing on topics which forces wish to explore in more depth (potentially to shape new research projects)

Joint Workshops - e.g. "Developing pathways to outcomes on addressing domestic abuse within the police"

Benefits of partnering with CPRL

  1. Improving policing practices: Learning from the experiences of all our member forces and the academic evidence base
  2. Value for money: Research undertaken and supported by each partner brings learning for all other members. The current multiplier effect is potentially 20 to 1 - meaning very high value for money
  3. Maximising research funding: Each force benefits from pooling of the membership funds, to create a pot of funding to benefit all forces. Moreover, for each £1 of membership funding, CPRL raises £10 in external grants
  4. Free online research seminars and events: Each force can take part in the monthly research seminars and other events (online or on campus), giving them a further forum to present their own research and initiatives to a wide audience and gather ideas
  5. A collaborative innovation hub: CPRL provides members with the opportunity to test innovation, e.g. piloting digital initiatives, and to share blueprints and risks

Evaluation of ‘WeMove’; a mentoring intervention to prevent young people becoming involved in organised crime and violence

Findings from an evaluation of 'WeMove'; a pilot that was funded by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to support children and young people aged 12 to 18 years impacted by serious and violent crime, either as perpetrators or victims. Central to WeMove was one-to-one support by trained mentors. The evaluation conducted by the Open University aimed to assess implementation and early impacts to evidence programme effectiveness.
