Online seminar: Complexity and uncomfortable knowledge: Implications for policing

Dates
Thursday, March 13, 2025 - 13:00 to 14:30

First presentation:

Uncomfortable knowledge, the production of ignorance, and the trustworthiness of UK policing – Prof Mark Fenton-O’Creevy

Why do organisations that employ many good people committed to serving the public fail to notice, or challenge terrible behaviour? Some of the answers may lie in recent work on the production and uses of ignorance in organisations. Mark Fenton-O’Creevy will discuss his recently published research (in collaboration with Ben Bowles, Linda Maguire and Emma Williams)  that addresses this question.

Second presentation:

Financial decision making enabling within a police service as a system – Davin Parrott, West Midlands Police

As with any large organisation, decisions regarding funding, budgeting, etc. must be made within police forces and these decisions will have effects beyond any one department or team; in short, police forces are systems.

This presentation will outline an approach taken within West Midlands Police that seeks to enable informed decision making through a systems approach to force finances.

Evaluation of ‘WeMove’; a mentoring intervention to prevent young people becoming involved in organised crime and violence

Findings from an evaluation of 'WeMove'; a pilot that was funded by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to support children and young people aged 12 to 18 years impacted by serious and violent crime, either as perpetrators or victims. Central to WeMove was one-to-one support by trained mentors. The evaluation conducted by the Open University aimed to assess implementation and early impacts to evidence programme effectiveness.
