A project which enables primary school teachers to learn how to teach their pupils a new language and a set of free online courses intended to make an understanding of Scots law accessible to everyone have been shortlisted for the prestigious Herald Higher Education Awards.

The languages project, led by The OU’s Dr Sylvia Warnecke in partnership with SCILT, Scotland's National Centre for Languages, has seen 51 teachers from 45 primary schools across nine local authorities participate in its first year.

The teachers learn a new language at the same time as learning the skills necessary to teach the language to their pupils through an innovative online learning programme developed by The OU and SCILT.

The project has received very positive feedback from participants and is now being rolled out across Scotland. It has been shortlisted in the Partnership category.

Law making in Scotland is a suite of free online courses which can be combined with a credit-bearing assessment module to create a path from informal to formal learning.

The four courses cover Scottish courts and the law, the Scottish Parliament and law making, legal skills and debates in Scotland and Scottish legal heroes, and are designed to be accessible and useful to all learners, opening up the study and understanding of Scots law to a wider audience.

Around 800 learners have participated since the courses’ launch in October 2017. Law making in Scotland has been shortlisted in the Enhancing Student Learning category.

The Awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow on Thursday 28 June.
