Mat Davies, aged 40 from Edinburgh, fulfilled his life-long dream to gain a degree, by graduating with the Open University as part of our Class of 2020.
Feeling incredibly proud of his OU Bachelor of Arts honours degree in Arts and Humanities, Mat is delighted that he was able to have the opportunity to become an adult learner.
Studying for a degree was always something he wanted to do but didn’t feel mature enough or ready to commit to a degree at school-leaving age. So, in January 2016, he felt his time had come and began studying with the OU.
Receiving his first OU study pack is something Mat looks back at as a particular highlight of his studies, he revealed: “Seeing my parents reaction of bewilderment, excitement and terror when I broke the news I’d be studying by showing them my first study pack is always something I’ll remember!”
But his biggest highlight above all, was to be given the chance to achieve a life-long dream that he could fit around his working life and other commitments.
Using the Student Support Team and his tutors as part of his support network is something he highly recommends, he said: “There are highs and lows, so you need a good network around you to lean on when you need it. In addition to the fantastic support I received from my tutor and the Student Support Team, my parents and girlfriend have been a constant support to me throughout my studies.”
When asked what advice he would offer to those currently studying he suggests giving it everything you’ve got. He added:
Mat describes being able to add his degree onto his CV as a “sweet moment” and is feeling positive that such a great achievement can start opening many doors as he moves forward in his career.
Mat shared a video message to fellow OU Class of 2020 gradautes.
Congratulations Mat, we welcome you to the #OUfamily!
