The Open University has announced the appointment of Michael Bower as the new Director of The Open University in Ireland, following a competitive recruitment process. Michael will take up the role on 30 March 2026, succeeding John D’Arcy, who will retire in April after 15 years in the role.
Michael is currently Deputy Director of The Open University in Ireland and is well known across the higher education and skills sectors for his leadership in developing strategic partnerships and collaborative networks across the island. Over the past 11 years, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening the OU’s relationships with partners across higher education, the skills sector, industry and government.
His leadership has been instrumental in positioning The Open University in Ireland as a partner of choice, while advancing its mission to make higher-level education more accessible to learners in both Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Michael brings extensive experience of the higher education landscape across Ireland and the UK, alongside a strong commitment to inclusive, lifelong learning. His appointment ensures continuity of leadership and a continued focus on widening access to education, addressing skills needs, and supporting learners at all stages of life.
