Brian Built His MBA Around His Life, Studying While Leading in Digital Sustainability.

Brian, dressed in a suit, sat smiling to camera in front of a window onto a housing in Dublin.

A typical study routine reflected this balance. Evenings were often reserved for learning after the workday ended. “Weekdays could be two or three hours of study in the evening, while weekends stretched longer if I had deadlines,” Brian continues. “Everything was aligned to my own calendar and availability.”

Of course, balancing study alongside a full life required discipline and support. Like many OU students, Brian was managing multiple responsibilities at once, work, family and downtime. “It’s a challenge for everyone, but OU support, flexibility and encouragement from fellow students helped enormously.”

The ability to study anywhere also played a role in Brian’s success. “I’ve studied on planes, trains and automobiles, and even on a beach.” Brian could structure his study around work, family, and his adventurous lifestyle, which includes alpinism, arctic expeditions, diving, and endurance cycling. “

Professionally, the impact of Brian’s OU studies has been immediate. As Principal and Head of Digital Sustainability at The Sustainable Business Group and a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin, Brian applies the knowledge and skills from his MBA daily. “My degree qualifications enabled a portfolio approach to working, given the diversity of my experience and qualifications.”

Brian’s OU journey has been transformative. It has advanced his career, fostered confidence, and reinforced his commitment to lifelong learning. His story demonstrates that higher education can flex around life rather than requiring life to bend around study. As he advises prospective students, “Just do it. You can start, choose your own schedule and modules, and finish when it suits you.”
