Equality and Diversity

At The Open University in Ireland, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed, regardless of background, identity or circumstance. Our mission is to be open to people, places, methods and ideas – and that means embedding equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into everything we do.

We strive to create a learning and working environment where all staff, students and partners are treated with dignity and respect, where discrimination has no place, and where diversity is recognised as a source of strength and innovation.

What equality and diversity means for us

Equality and diversity are central to our purpose as an are open university. We:

  • Celebrate diversity in all its forms – including age, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, socio-economic background, religion or belief, caring responsibilities and more.
  • Challenge discrimination and barriers that prevent individuals from achieving their potential.
  • Promote opportunity and inclusion in learning, research, employment and university life.
  • Ensure respectful engagement, where differences are heard and valued.

Our commitment to EDI is not just about compliance with legislation – it is about actively fostering an inclusive culture where everyone feels welcome and supported.

Strategic direction: EDI Plan 2022 – 2027

The Open University has developed an Institutional Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Plan 2022-2027 that sets out our strategic approach and priorities for advancing equality and inclusion across the university community. This plan helps guide actions, monitor progress and support meaningful change for staff and students alike.

Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Racism

We are committed to eradicating discrimination in every form. Discrimination – whether direct, indirect, or tooted in bias – is a denial of opportunity and has no place in our community. Our Anti-Discrimination Statement reinforces that everyone has the right to study and work in a safe, respectful environment.

We are also actively progressing our approach to anti-racism, engaging with frameworks such as the Race Equality Charter to identify barriers and drive systematic improvements for staff and students from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Fair employment and inclusive practices

The Open University in Ireland is committed to fair employment practices that promote diversity in recruitment, development and progression. Recent initiatives include anonymous recruitment campaigns and regular review of policies and procedures to reduce bias and widen participation,

Across the OU, inclusive policy development, consultation with staff and equality monitoring help ensure that decision-making reflects diverse voices and lived experiences.
