Dr Helen Glasspoole-Bird joins the Centre

Having first enjoyed classroom teaching for a few years, Helen worked as a lecturer in HE including Initial Teacher Education (Oxford Brookes University and York St John University). During this time, she spent a year working with teachers and education projects in Uganda. More recently, she has held Research Associate roles at UCL and the University of York working on projects focused on Police learning (blended learning for CPD) and classroom pedagogy.

Helen’s research interests include reflective practice for professionals working on the front line including how ‘difficult knowledge’ is processed both cognitively and emotionally. She pursued her interest in the emotional dimension of teaching, policing and nursing for her PhD by analysing the ways in which individuals manage anxiety and how they understand their changing sense of self whilst becoming a teacher, police officer or nurse. Helen is interested in the work of the Centre, particularly how research evidence shapes policy and practice.

Helen enjoys walking and has completed a few long-distance walks including Wainwright’s Coast to Coast. When she and her husband aren’t exploring the nearby Yorkshire countryside, Helen enjoys learning new crafts and recently got hooked on crochet.
