Congratulations to one of our PhD student Hannah Sargeant, who has been awarded the prestigious Amelia Earhart Fellowship for women in aerospace-related science and engineering from Zonta International. She is one of 30 women selected globally for this year’s award which includes US$10,000 to spend on research or living costs for the rest of her studies.

Hannah’s research uses techniques to produce water from lunar minerals and she hopes her research will be used on the ProSPA instrument which will be heading to a high latitude region of the Moon around 2023 on board the Luna-27 mission.

When asked about her award Hannah said, “I feel honoured to have been awarded the fellowship and to be recognized for my work. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship has supported many incredibly talented women in the field and I feel lucky to be included in that group. There are times when doing a PhD can be exhausting but it’s opportunities like this that make it so rewarding!”

We asked how Hannah plans to make use of her fellowship, “As I come to the end of my PhD this award will be helpful in easing the pressure of writing up my thesis in good time and perhaps finishing another paper.  I may also treat myself to a new computer that I’ve been putting off for a few years”.
