Champions in Gender Equality

The School of Physical Sciences have successfully renewed their Institute of Physics (IoP) Juno Champion status in recognition of their commitment to gender equality and improving the working practices for all school members. Specifically, SPS successfully demonstrated that the six core Juno principles were embedded in School life, including in relation to training and development, staff and student engagement, mentoring and support, regular data analysis and equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives more broadly.

The panel recognised the combined efforts of each member of the SPS Equality and Diversity team in supporting the School to embed good practice and in its application for renewal. The Equality and Diversity team draws its memberships from across SPS staff groups and postgraduate students, with members at different career stages and with different experiences. Chair of the team, Dr Vic Pearson said she was "extremely proud of what had been achieved in SPS over recent years and of the efforts put in by the team and all members of the School to improve the environment for everyone".

The School are one of only 22 departments in the UK with Juno Champion status and the renewal is indicative of the School's sustained efforts over a period of several years. The award gives the School additional impetus to further planned actions for continual review and improvement.

Head of School, Professor Sally Jordan said “I am delighted that the School has received this ringing endorsement for its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, which includes but goes way beyond gender equality".
