Diaspora remittances, social policy and development: Nigerian and Ghanaian senders’ perspectives and experiences

Speakers: Professor Nicola Yeates and Dr Freda Owusu-Sykere

Abstract: Drawing on a qualitative study of senders of remittances among a group of UK-based senders, this presentation spotlights key aspects of sending practices and the social contexts (including of social protection) that generate, propel and sustain sending. We draw attention to the importance of transnational family and kin networks as a factor in sending dynamics and international development finance more generally, and highlight the importance of a transnational perspective for understanding contemporary work and welfare in Britain and beyond.

Bios: Dr. Freda Owusu-Sykere gained her PhD at The Open University in 2014, and is a Visiting Research Fellow with the Department of Social Policy and Criminology. Nicola Yeates is Professor of Social Policy in the Dept. of Social Policy and Criminology.
