Our CuSP annual lecture will be taking place at the Anomalous Space in London on March 25th(1-5pm). Our guest speaker this year is Prof Richard Williams, Emeritus Professor of Mental Health Strategy at the University of South Wales. Richard’s talk is titled ‘Evidence-based Psychosocial Care before, during, and after Disasters: Where Next?’
Richard will review a selection of items from the healthcare and psychological sciences that have most impinged on him in the last 25 years in trying to empower better care for people affected by emergencies, incidents, disasters, terrorism, conflict and disease outbreaks. Towards the end, he will raise questions about where the sciences that should be involved in the endeavour might go next. A discussion will follow.
Richard was a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for 40 years but also led the NHS Health Advisory Service, held a series of academic, clinical, and managerial posts in England and Wales, became an adviser to the UK’s government and to NATO after the 7/7 bombings, and for more than 25 years has been working on a range of extreme events including pandemics, disasters, and terrorist attacks. Thus, the talk will be of interest both to CuSP members but also to psychologists and researchers working in the areas of health, trauma, group processes, and organisational studies more generally.
